Now sea creatures will be saved by Robot fishes

New York University researchers have developed ‘robotic’ fish that they say could save the lives of thousands of undersea creatures. The prototypes fool shoals of fish into thinking they are their ‘leader’ and have in tests changed the direction the group swims in. Researchers say that if deployed into the water, which has been affected by a toxic spill, these robots could lead marine life away from danger.
They could also help them to steer clear of man-made obstacles like undersea turbines.
Developer Dr Maurizio Porfiri said that normally mankind takes inspiration from nature to improve itself, but this time he wanted to better the lot of aquatic animals.
“Studies of schools of fish, flocks of birds and herds of animals have inspired robotic systems designed for our own applications,” the Daily Mail quoted Porfiri as saying.
“But I wanted to see if I could close the gap, bringing some of those benefits back into the natural world. Schooling fish have a rich system of information sharing,” he told Livescience.com.
“They decide when to school based on a wide variety of factors, including vision and pressure cues from other fish. By studying these cues, we can learn how school members recognise - and follow - a leader.”
Tests showed that the robot was able to track, follow and mill with the other fish in such as way as to influence their behaviour.
As of now, Porfiri has only been able to design creatures, which swim on the surface of the water, but he hopes to soon make models which can dive and resurface.

If every country had it’s own type of cellphones, Russian ones could look like this. It could be made of wood which is cheap and is available everywhere in Russia, it has simple functions like call and bye, it would be made in Finland cause everyone in Russia knows good phones are made in Finland (like Nokia) and one additional option is a must – a beer bottle opener from the backside of the phone – very handy!

Europe launches trillion-euro energy revamp

http://cdn.physorg.com/newman/gfx/news/theeuisthewo.jpg
European leaders launched Friday a trillion-euro bid to slash dependency on Middle East oil and Russian gas, clearing the way to place nuclear power at the centre of 21st century needs.
At a summit shaken by instability over Egypt's popular revolt and soaring oil prices, the European Union moved to reclaim control over energy supply for the rest of the century with reforms designed to unlock private investment.
The EU is the world's largest regional energy market -- 500 million people and 20 million companies.
Governments committed to a broad sweep of market reforms, linking national and regional electricity grids and gas pipelines by 2014 to allow power to circulate freely and cheaply, from those who produce it and have surpluses to those who don't and need it.
"No EU member state should remain isolated from the European gas and electricity networks after 2015 or see its energy security jeopardised by lack of the appropriate connections," read summit conclusions whose adoption was announced by EU president Herman Van Rompuy on Twitter.
"Beyond the management of today's crisis, we're also laying the ground for a sustainable and job-creating growth," Van Rompuy tweeted.
Island states Cyprus and Malta, as well as Baltic countries whose infrastructure remains tied to the former Soviet Union, feared their needs may be considered too insignificant for the big energy players to invest in costly transmission networks.
But the EU agreed that pooled public money could underpin completion of this so-called 'supergrid' -- although ballpark sums will not be produced until the summer.
Initial European Commission estimates suggested that some 2.5 billion euros ($3.4 billion) could be diverted from unspent EU budgets.
While one EU diplomat said it was "doubtful" that Britain would back such an approach, Prime Minister David Cameron was comfortable with allowing "some limited public finance to leverage private funding," as the summit conclusions specified, provided it comes from cuts elsewhere in the EU budget.
The network development cost over the remainder of the decade is tipped to exceed 200 billion euros.
The other big change, at the instigation of France but firmly backed by the government in London, was to reposition domestically-produced nuclear energy at the heart of the bloc's long-term suppplies.
In a carefully-worded shift in emphasis, alongside investment in renewable energy technologies, EU states will also promote "safe and sustainable low-carbon technologies" -- this including nuclear -- under climate action goals.
The volume of gas used to generate electricity requirements in the EU has trebled over the past 15 years
Map of northern Europe showing the route of the planned South Stream and Nabucco gas pipelines. European leaders launched a trillion-euro bid to slash dependency on Middle East oil and Russian gas, clearing the way to place nuclear power at the centre of 21st century needs.
This came under attack from ecologists and Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, the head of the Party of European Socialists, as: "Old leaders, with old ideas, simply proposing old energy methods for Europe’s future." Brussels-based NGO Energy Strategy Center also saw a missed opportunity given a "significant shift currently underway in the climate and energy debate."
It pointed out that, yet again, "China is rapidly becoming a global leader in the technologies of a resource efficient, low-carbon economy."
France maintains it is not trying surreptitiously to reclassify nuclear alongside wind, wave, solar or biomass energy production as Europe tries to meet three-pronged commitments to combat global warming by 2020.
These are to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent compared to 1990 levels, to raise renewables production to 20 percent of consumption and to make energy efficiency savings of 20 percent.
However, nothing is set in stone after 2020 -- and the political mood now, amid greater questioning of scientific evidence, is for a more substantial use of the nuclear alternative.
"Nuclear is not a renewable source," said a senior official under commission head Jose Manuel Barroso of post-2050 guidelines, but "the make-up of national energy mixes is a matter of national choice."
The volume of gas used to generate electricity requirements in the EU has trebled over the past 15 years, with some three quarters of all gas imported into the bloc between now and 2020 coming from Russia, Algeria and non-EU Norway -- ensuring a close link to the price of oil.
To that end, the EU must also develop "a reliable, transparent and rules-based partnership with Russia," leaders also concluded.

Google Chrome 9 (Instant Browsing)

http://zapp3.staticworld.net/news/graphics/169524-google-chrome-bookmark-sync-thumb_original.jpg
Google has launched version 9 of its Chrome browser, which features Chrome Instant search, a speed enhancer that loads Web pages as you type a URL. Other notable upgrades include WebGL support for hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, as well as access to Google's new Chrome Web Store.

Chrome users don't have to do anything to upgrade to version 9, which downloads and installs automatically. You'll see this message when the upgrade is complete, and Chrome needs to restart:
For most users, Chrome Instant will be the most noticeable change. It's turned off by default, however. To activate it, go to the Basics tab of Chrome's options and check the box in the Search section:
With Instant enabled, most Web pages will load as soon as you type a URL in the search box (or "omnibox" in Google's parlance). In the example below, the PCWorld site appeared as soon as I typed "pc" in the omnibox.

WebGL support brings hardware-accelerated 3D graphics to the browser--without the need for additional software. Google's Body Browser, for instance, uses WebGL to employ a computer's GPU to speed up rendering of 3D graphics:
Lastly, Chrome users in the United States can now access the Chrome Web Store:
There's a link to the store on the New Tab page, plus two sample apps. If you ignore the sample apps, they'll eventually disappear.
Overall, Chrome 9 adds some compelling upgrades while retaining the speed and simplicity that makes Google's browser so compelling. Do check it out.

Internet technology is a tool for political change in Arab world

 http://ifikra.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/blackberry_ban_arab_world.png
The revolts in Tunisia, Egypt and Yemen are driven by deep dissatisfaction with authoritarian regimes, but Internet technology has played a crucial role as a 21st-century weapon for democracy movements, experts say.
http://asiancorrespondent.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/us-internet-map.jpg

Inspired by the recent overthrow of the Zine El Abidine Ben Ali dictatorship in Tunisia, citizen activists on Thursday escalated their protests in Egypt and Yemen, denouncing their respective governments. And social media played the dual role of a virtual town square where protest leaders rally the masses and counter government disinformation.
Services such as Twitter and Facebook are "playing an increasingly large role in almost any mass protest around the world," said John Palfrey, a law professor at Harvard University who studies limits on Internet expression. "We will see more of this."
 http://globalvoicesonline.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/faceook.jpg
The demonstrations in Egypt, where the government completely shut down the Internet late Thursday, "were started primarily by the April 6 Movement, which was basically a Facebook campaign that started in 2008 and called for protests about workers' rights," said Lina Khatib, a Stanford University expert on Arab reform who was in Cairo on Thursday before leaving for Paris.
During the latest unrest, Twitter became an instant information tool, she said: "People were spreading the news on Twitter. They would alert people where demonstrators were gathering."
But it is long-simmering anger against authoritarian governments that is sending
unarmed protesters against police and soldiers."What has already happened in Tunis and may be happening right now in Cairo and Tripoli is a revolution that uses social media, but is not a revolution caused by social media," said Clay Shirky, a professor at New York University's Graduate Interactive Telecommunications Program.
Most of the Egyptian protesters have probably never used the Internet. But Internet-savvy elites were the catalyst for the demonstration, Khatib said.
"The reason why it was so effective is because of what happened in Tunisia," she said. "They saw it on TV. They heard about it. It was the first time a civilian uprising had torn down a regime in the Arab world."
Technology's role in organizing opposition has not been lost on the governments of that volatile region.
In Cairo, by late Thursday phone service was cut, Twitter and Facebook were blocked and a media blackout was in place, Khatib said. "The government knew people would be coordinating their movements to join the demonstration," she said.
Egypt is far from alone in seeing the Internet and other new technology as threats. The number of countries censoring or blocking at least some Internet content has increased from two about 10 years ago to three dozen now, Palfrey said.
http://www.foreignpolicy.com/files/fp_uploaded_images/100422_iStock_000002242947Small.jpg
Iran, for example, blocked access to Facebook for fear it was being used to help facilitate street protests over the disputed presidential election in 2009, and the Palo Alto company said it saw its traffic from Iran drop in half. The Chinese government, beginning with the 2008 Summer Olympics, began applying even more controls to the Internet. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are blocked by the communist government.
Facebook said in a statement Thursday: "We are aware of reports of disruption to service and have seen a drop in traffic from Egypt." San Francisco-based Twitter, which did not comment directly on the blocking of its service, said in a tweet, "We believe that the open exchange of info & views benefits societies & helps govts better connect w/ their people."
The Obama administration has taken a more aggressive stance against Internet censorship than previous administrations, Palfrey said.
On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged Egypt "not to prevent peaceful protests or block communications, including on social media."
But the uprising in Egypt, a longtime ally of the United States, puts President Barack Obama in a tough situation, and it's unclear how much pressure he will ultimately apply on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Khatib said.

"For the U.S., this is a test: Who do you really care about most?" she said. "The leaders in the Arab world, who are your allies, or the people who are calling for the same values you are supposed to represent?"
Jacob Appelbaum, a San Francisco programmer with the longtime open-source Tor Project, a program that cloaks the identity of users that is popular with corporations and free-speech activists alike, cautioned against "cyberutopia." The very technology used by democracy advocates can also be used to trap them, he said.
"The unblocking of Twitter may not be a good thing," Appelbaum said, unless protesters use a cloaking service. "It seems good on its face. But if the regime does not fall, it could hunt down everyone who uses Twitter."

Samsung Claims 10 Million Galaxy S Phones Sold

http://www.maximumpc.com/files/u69/galaxy_s_phones.jpg
Samsung Electronics said that Galaxy S, the company's showpiece Android-based smartphone, has crossed the 10 million-sold threshold seven months after it launched. The milestone puts Samsung among the vanguard manufacturers backing Google's white-hot Android platform, which is itself now the No 2 mobile OS in the world behind Symbian, according to analysts.

http://news.brothersoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Samsung-Galaxy-S-Sales-Pass-10-Million-in-7-Months.jpg
According to Samsung, 4 million Galaxy S units have been sold in North America, with 2.5 million sold in Europe and 2 million sold in Asia.

"The Galaxy S is the result of our 22-year heritage in the mobile industry," said JK Shin, President and Head, Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics, in a statement. "It is the realization of our concept of 'the Smart Life'— we wanted to make users' lives more convenient, more exciting and more integrated. Today's milestone shows that we have succeeded: 10 million Galaxy S users around the world are living the Smart Life."

Shin added that Samsung is selling more than 1.4 million Galaxy S devices per month.

Galaxy S was first introduced by Samsung at CTIA Las Vegas in March 2010, and strong word-of-mouth, solid reviews and customer embrace of Android devices propelled it to a spot among the coolest smartphones of 2010.

Galaxy S was released on all four of the major U.S. carriers last year, under different names, such as Sprint's Epic 4G and Verizon's Fascinate. Though each version has slightly different features, each includes a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen and a 1Ghz processor, 5MP camera, 2GB of storage and support for Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi.

Samsung's strength with the Android platform should come into sharper focus in 2011, as its Samsung Galaxy Tab—an Android-based rival to Apple's mighty iPad—looks to gain traction among tablet customers. Samsung has not released initial sales figures for the Galaxy Tab, which launched in November.

Samsung hit a pretty big milestone, announcing that it has sold 10 million Android OS Galaxy S smartphones since its launch in June 2010. That equals to about one device sold every two seconds.
According to Samsung, North America leads the Galaxy S sales chart with 4 million sales, followed by Europe at 2.5 million and Asia with 2 million sales.
"The Galaxy S is the result of our 22 year heritage in the mobile industry. It is the realization of our concept of 'the Smart Life' - we wanted to makes users' lives more convenient, more exciting, and more integrated", said JK Shin, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung. Today's milestone shows that we have succeeded: 10 million Galaxy S users around the world are living the Smart Life."

Control your iPhone with your voice with VoiceActivator

 http://masterjailbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/1297026922-21.png
If you have Jailbroken your iPhone or iPod touch and use jailbreak apps then you would know that most of the times jailbreak apps have something special in them. And one of the latest jailbreak app is Voice Activator by Chpwn. It is an app which enables you to give command to your iOS device with your voice.
http://www.iphonefamily.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/VoiceActivator-v1.1.1.png

to let you take full control of the Voice Control feature of your iPhone or iPod touch. Launch apps, open URLs, use Activator actions: it’s all here, in one tweak.
http://images.intomobile.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/google-voice-actions-chrome-to-phone-event.png
This app is certainly magical as it allows you to control your device with your voice commands just like in the good old movie scenes and definitely it would be useful for you while you don’t want to touch your iPhone for whatever reason.
Isn’t it too bad that devices running on the Android OS can enjoy voice based commands on the entire operating system? The voice search tool for the Android OS can literally search anything on the web, your phone, call contacts, give commands and complete a lot of other operations. The Apple iOS lacked this feature, although there is a voice command feature for the iPhone and the iPod Touch, these can’t be used for a complete OS search or carrying out other functions such as starting applications and speak to enter text.
The wait is over, thanks to the developer chpwn, the app that can bring Android like voice enabled functions to the iOS has finally arrived. It’s known as the VoiceActivator and can be downloaded from the BigBoss repository via Cydia for $4.99. And yeah, this is an app for the jailbroken iPhone and iPod Touch, so you’ll have to Jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch to make use of this app. There’s a video after the break demonstrating how this app works.

This app would be soon available as Cydia.Check out the demo of this app in the video below.

If you remember the launch of the iPhone 4 , Apple was initially supposed to launch white iPhone 4 soon after the black version. But things got little bit trickier for Apple regarding the issues of white iPhone 4 as it was having problem with its production and about some months ago Apple had announced that there would be no iPhone 4 launch.
